U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in World of Warcraft
By Ryan Singel EmailFebruary 22, 2008 | 2:15:43 PMCategories: Spooks Gone Wild

Virtual_osama_full Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.

The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

* The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.

* If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.

Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

The publicly available report -- which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs -- also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

* Video Analysis and Content Extraction - software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video

* Tangram - A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack

* Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination - This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program (http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/2002/12/56620). It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.

The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynard) in literature.

I feel your pain.

I don't know, I had/have a movie Idea about something like this...massive multi-player game with secret doors that you could go into and stash sensitive data later to be retrieved by another party. Sort of a safe way of communication, getting around all the taps and satellites and shit.

Anyway punk ass kid stumbles upon stash of government secrets starts getting tracked down in real life and has to get back in to get the goods to expose the bad guys before he gets wacked.

Throw in some computer animation a couple of chase scenes and some cool but imposable cheats that the kid and his friends use to best the evil government agents maybe even some young budding love and you have a totally cliché movie.

What a waste of time, resources and money.

Actually, I read a story about this a couple of months ago.

It turns out that there are SO many people on WoW that it allows for scientists to study a large group of people (basically a small "society") in ways that they could never do with the general public. The study was started by a university and was already showing promise a few months ago.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest flaws that I found with the study is that the interaction that the players have on WoW isn't the normal social interaction that regular people have (obviously, because the players are pretending to be someone or something else than they are in the REAL world).

Which is why I think that this "feasbility study" of WoW will eventually conclude that looking into MMOGs for terrorist groups is basically worthless, and the actual program will never go forward.... unless the study group figures out that with poor results, they'll lose their Government funding for studies like this in the future. Then you can expect GREAT results from the studies that won't be proven to be worthless for another 10-15 years (see the Global Warming study groups).

That's funny, seems like no matter what server I'm playing COD4 on everyone gangs up on the guy who gets first place 2 or 3 matches in a row.

I have not seen anyone ganged up on but I have seen people who have the spawn points and spawn order memorized, then go from point to point killing people as they spawn.

some of the clan servers also do some hokie shit with the servers to give them advantages, like decrease the spawn time so you can get killed in the same air strike twice. Some also seem to re spawn you in almost the same spot you died in, which sucks. If you killed a dude and then moved past just to have him re spawn behind you and shoot you in the back. I have also seen people moving way too fast to not be cheating, and all this on a punk buster server.

Of course what I really hate is the NOOB TUBE'ers

Yeah I've been a victim of that, one time I died 2 times in a single airstrike, talk about getting pissed off! Also, the spawning thing is fucked up, I called em out for it on one clan server and got banned for questioning them, dirty bastards...........

Yes sir, I prefer playing FPS on PC myself. The only advantage COD4 on consoles has over PC is you get prestige mode........
