Comedian George Carlin dies in Los Angeles at 71
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
He's already missed by me..

My dad woke me up to tell me. Very depressing. He had so many fucking hours of material, so many HBO specials (just had a live one a few months ago), his career is unmatchable. Carlin is a legend in his own right. I don't care what Pryor fans say, he was never as good as Carlin.

I just fucking heard it. I cant believe it. Georgie. IMO the best there ever was or will be.
RIP . On his last special(which I thaught was one of his greatest and most relevant ever) he said that he was just beginning to enjoy being "an old fuck".
There will never be another Carlin.

I couldn't believe it when I heard it this morning. We just watched one of his specials from the 80's the other night and it reminded me how fuckin funny this dude was. Way too young to be dead.

The first stand up comedy special I remember watching was George Carlin's Back in Town when I was 12 years old and it literally changed my life and jumpstarted my love of stand up comedy.
It's hard for me to put into words how much admiration and respect I have for the guy. When we had to write a tribute speech in my speech and debate class at 16 years old, I wrote mine about George. I only wish I had gotten to see him live before he passed but online ticket scalpers always pushed ticket prices over $150.
The world has lost a truly brilliant comedy legend.

Same here. We use to get free HBO in the 80's and I remember my parents watching the 1982 special he did. I hung out outside the living room so I could hear it and got busted laughing. But they let me sit there and watch the rest of it. He was not just funny. He was ruthlessly insightful. And his comedy was in no way diluted by his age. He was a wickedly brilliant angry old man.
But 71 years was a good run. I hope he left here ready to bust balls in the Great Beyond. I think God will set him up at the brilliant table with Lenny and Bill Hicks.
