OAKLAND, Calif. - You know you’re in a different kind of college when a teaching assistant sets five marijuana plants down in the middle of a lab and no one blinks a bloodshot eye.

Welcome to Oaksterdam University, a new trade school where higher education takes on a whole new meaning.

The school prepares people for jobs in California’s thriving medical marijuana industry. For $200 and the cost of two required textbooks, students learn how to cultivate and cook with cannabis, study which strains of pot are best for certain ailments, and are instructed in the legalities of a business that is against the law in the eyes of the federal government. “My basic idea is to try to professionalize the industry and have it taken seriously as a real industry, just like beer and distilling hard alcohol,” said Richard Lee, 45, an activist and pot-dispensary owner who founded the school in a downtown storefront last fall.

So far, 60 students have completed the two-day weekend course, which is sold out through May. At the end of the class, students are given a take-home test, with the highest scorer — make that “top scorer” — earning the title of class valedictorian.

Before getting to Horticulture 101, the hands-on highlight of Oaksterdam U, the 20 budding botanists, entrepreneurs and political activists at a recent weekend session sat politely through two law lectures and a visiting professor’s history talk.

In the lab, Lee measured plant food into a plastic garbage can and explained how, with common sense, upgraded electrical outlets, a fan and an air filter, students can grow pot at home for fun, health, public service — or profit.

Lee explained to his students how to prune and harvest plants, handing the clipping shears to a woman who wasn’t sure how close to the stalk to cut without damaging it. He offered his thoughts on which commercial nutrient preparations are best, as well as the advantages of hydroponics, or soil-free gardening.

During a discussion of neighbor relations, he warned against setting boobytraps to keep curious kids out of outdoor gardens.

Students gave various reasons for enrolling. Some said they were simply curious. Others said they wanted tips for growing their own weed, although judging from the questions, a few were ready for the graduate seminar Lee recently added to the curriculum.

'Giving back to the community'
Jeff Sanders, 52, said he has been buying medical marijuana since 2003, but wants to open a dispensary in the San Joaquin Valley because he doesn’t like having to drive up to San Francisco and paying the markup.

“I see it as a good thing. You are giving back to the community,” Sanders said.

Patrick O’Shaughnessy, 37, said he started smoking pot regularly for the first time about a year ago to treat his chronic migraines, depression and anxiety. After attending class, he said felt more confident about growing his own, which he wants to do because the dispensary he frequents often sells out of his favorite strain.

Oaksterdam U draws its name from the jokey nickname for a section of Oakland where some of California’s earliest medical marijuana dispensaries took root. The nickname in turn was inspired by the city of Amsterdam, in Holland, where pot use is tolerated.

At one point, the Oaksterdam neighborhood had at least 15 clubs and coffee shops selling pot, a number that dwindled to four when the city started issuing permits and collecting taxes from them a few years ago.

A dozen states have legalized medical marijuana
California was the first of a dozen states that have legalized marijuana use for patients with a doctor’s recommendation. Despite periodic raids by federal drug agents and the threat of prosecution, clubs and cooperatives where customers can buy the drug of their choice have proliferated; California has 300 to 400, according to advocacy groups.

Entry-level workers are paid a little more than minimum wage, while “bud tenders,” can make over $50,000 a year, and owners and top managers more than $100,000, Lee said. But there’s also a certain amount of risk — and not just financial, but legal.

Michael Chapman, an assistant agent in charge with the Drug Enforcement Agency’s San Francisco office, said authorities are aware of Oaksterdam U and don’t see any reason to shut it down. Talking about marijuana is not illegal, and while a small amount of pot is kept on the premises, the DEA tries “to concentrate our case work on the most significant violators,” he said.

Still, Chapman said he doesn’t like Lee’s effort to wrap cannabis education in a cap and gown.

“I think they are sending the wrong message out to the community and it’s something that could only facilitate criminal behavior,” he said.

Good for them, pot is fucking harmless. I smoked pot for 10+ years before quitting and never had a single problem. Not one. I've never had anyone talk about how I got high and was an asshole or tried to start a fight.

I didn't even really start drinking until I turned 21 and I don't even drink liquor any more because I would keep drinking more and more before what I already drank has been processed. Alcohol and tobacco are WAAAAAAY worse than pot and the fact that our federal government would THROW A FUCKING TERMINALLY ILL PATIENT IN JAIL is despicable. Land of the free indeed...

Check out this disgusting video of Mitt Romney telling a guy whose FIVE DOCTORS say that medical marijuana is the only reason he's alive how he feels about medical marijuana. What would Jesus do, Romney? Stupid, unsympathetic Mormon fuck!

I saw this report on MSNBC this past weekend.

They mentioned how this is something like the 4th or 5th place in this area that has tried to either have classes like this, or to outright sell pot from a storefront.

The reporter said that all of the places like this have lasted about a week... then the owners have been arrested and the businesses shut down.

did you guys see the pot vending machine yet?!?!

"Hot button: Medical marijuana vending machines open in L.A.
Americans who have traveled to Japan are no doubt familiar with the ubiquitous jidoohanbaiki: standalone vending machines that dispense soft drinks, coffee, food, comic books, paperbacks, clothing (including underwear and stockings), videos, CDs, jewelry, flowers — and booze (beer, whiskey, sake).

California went a big step further today: Vending machines that dispense medical marijuana.

The first two were activated today in Los Angeles at licensed cannabis clubs. State voters approved doctor-prescribed marijuana in 1996 for patients suffering serious pain or nausea who don't get relief from other drugs. (Here's background on medical marijuana in California.)

This is how the AVMs — Anytime Vending Machines — work:

• Customers bring their prescriptions for approval at the AVMs, housed in enclosed room guarded 24/7.
• They are fingerprinted and photographed.
• They receive a pre-paid credit carded loaded with their individual profiles.
• They choose their dosage (3.5 grams or 7 grams) and one of five strains of marijuana.
• The marijuana is in capsule form and dispensed in vacuum-sealed packages.
• They can buy no more than 1 ounce a week.

Anticipated future vending: Viagra, Vicodin, Propecia and anti-depressants. (Seriously.)

The BBC can tell you more.

Yep... I saw this story on MSNBC as well... right before or after the Marijuana-Growing School story... because they were related stories.

Strange that I caught both of these stories on MSNBC... because I rarely watch that station. I guess it was because ONE news station was FINALLY doing a non-political story for the first time in the last 18 months.

Yeah... crazy thing is... I don't even smoke it anymore.

My metabolism is SO damn fast, that no matter how strong the pot/hash was, my buzz only lasted for about 30 minutes... then I felt like absolute SHIT for the next 24 hours.

Same thing with coke (I assume)... my metabolism would burn it out of me so fast, that I NEVER got a rush from it. It just kept me wide awake, that's it (if I had actually used it... which, of course, I didn't). My friends who were with me would say "Then you're not doing enough"... I'd say "I've done just as much, if not more than YOU!"... I wasn't going to risk a heart attack JUST to try to get a rush.
(Of course... I say all of this HYPOTHETICALLY... because I was in my late-teens and early-20s in the late-1980s and early-1990s... and we ALL know that cocaine wasn't around back then... right? Just play along, dammit!).

Meds also affect me differently than they affect other people. I'm on massive doses of Vicodin for my back injury... doses that would have most people constantly sleeping (or is that a mild coma?). But, of course... for ME, it keeps me wide awake and a bit hyper... and it makes me chain-smoke like a FIEND... and the nicotine in the cigarettes makes the Vicodin's effects stronger... which makes me smoke more... it's a VICIOUS circle.

WOW... that's another side-effect it has on ME, too... too funny.

I just HAVE to do something... so I tend to clean (especially if I run out of my prescription for a few days, and then start taking it again).
