Did you hear that they canceled the long-awaited DVD set of The State? They recorded all these bonus features and had it as a preview on some DVD I saw and MTV scrapped the whole thing. They probably didn't want to pay any licensing fees for the songs, just like with iTunes. I love Reno 911 but it's really hit or miss. Last week with Dangle's black family was hilarious!

When it comes to hip hop, there's three different types and I appreciate two of them on different levels. You've got your pure lyrical ability rappers like Jay Z (Reasonable Doubt from '96 was his best), Eminem (especially his older stuff), Royce 5'9" (lesser known but brilliant), and Nas, then you've got your "send a positive message" rappers like Talib Kweli and Common. Kweli even started out an album with "You say you're never scared, there's kids in other countries making jerseys, jeans, and sneakers they can never wear," and went on to say "People ask me how we're wearin' diamonds when there's kids in Sierra Leone losin' their arms for cryin' while they're minin'." He pioneered the whole 'anti-blood diamond' trend in the hip-hop community that Kanye West jumped on soon after.

I can appreciate the aforementioned stuff but can't fucking stand all that "dirty south" gutter ass street thug Lil' Jon (pretty much any rapper that has Lil' before their name) ignorant with no message bullshit. I think you should only be able to rap about negative things if you're a strong lyricist like the guys I named.

One line that really stood out to me by Royce 5'9" was:
"Buryin' the lenion (sp?) under the gravel, saw off the pump handle and barrel for carryin' convenience"

There's good stuff out there, but too many people eat up the "sweat drippin' down my balls" bullshit.
